There is almost nothing written about the composer Roy in any lexica. The first print of this quartet speaks of him as an Artiste du Theatre de la Porte St. Martin. It was published about 1815 in Paris by Dufaut.
According to Fetis, Eugène Roy or Leroy died in 1816 in Paris 45 years old. So he was born in 1770 or 1771. In his last years he had been second conductor at the "bals champêtres de Tivoli". He played several instruments and composed numerous works for flute.
This quartet was dedicated to the horn player L. Poussez, who had been taught by the famous horn player Pierre Louis Collin in Paris.
