Carl Grimm - Potpourri for Horn and String Quartet
The horn player Carl Grimm was born on March 17, 1791 in Hildburghausen. His father, Christoph Grimm, was a valet and horn player for Duchess Charlotte of Saxe-Hildburghausen from the House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Together with his brothers Christian and Heinrich, he learned to play the horn from his father. Together with his brother Christian, he was accepted into the Hildburghausen court orchestra and appointed court musician in 1816. Concert tours are known from this time, where the Brothers Grimm appeared together and with their father as soloists. As "freres Grimm" they published horn duos and quartets in print. Around 1822 the two brothers left their position in Hildburghausen and went to Wiesbaden, where they became members of the ducal Nassau court orchestra in Biebrich. Carl Grimm retired in 1854 and died on November 18, 1855; in Wiesbaden.
In 1824/25 the present potpourri was published by Carl Grimm at the Schott publishing house in Mainz. Assuming that Carl Grimm also played this work, he must have been an above-average horn player.
