was born 1725 in Rom and died after 1767 in Paris. The music literature also calls him Rugge, Rugi, Ruggi, Rutgi, Rouge Romano etc. We do not know anything about his youth or his education in flute playing and composition. His name is firstly mentioned at his chamber music works for flute, which were published between1751 and 1754 by I. Walsh in London.
He probably lived in England between 1751 – 1753and then moved to Paris. We can read in the newsletter in Paris about him playing the solo flute in Concert Spirituel in March 1753: »M. Rouge, Romain, a joué un Concerto de flûte de sa composition« (Affiches de Province, 28. März 1753, S. 51).
It is likely, that he worked for the Marquis de Seignelay between 1757 and 1761 and lived in the castle. His compositions consists of works for flute, sinfonies and vocal works. This work "Trio / Per Un Flauto Traversiere / Un Violino, ed un Corno da Caccia / Del Sig.r Filippo Ruge" is kept at the Alström Collection in Sweden - Statens musikbibliotek - The Music Library of Sweden (formerly Musikaliska akademiens bibliotek).
Trio / Per un Flauto Traversiere / un Violino, ed un Corno da Caccia
Del Sig.r Filippo Ruge (1725 - 1767)
- first print -
This interesting work of the Italian Filippo Ruge is written for a rare instrumentation. The horn part in D takes mostly the function of the basso instrument and only reaches d''. That's why it is one of those few thankful baroque pieces for horn.
