Dauprat, Louis-François - Concertino for Horn (1825)

He received his first musical training in the Maîtrise de Notre-Dame de Paris, but from which he had to quit the revolution (1790). Since the founding of the Paris Cons., He was one of the first students in the Horn class of Kenn, which was established in 1795, and received in 1796 as the first prize of the Conservatoire for Horn. Then he was a member of various military music formations (enfants de troupe, garde national, later garde consulaire). 1801-1805 he visited the Cons. the composes lessons Catels and Gossecs, but took his mth. Study on a new basis under the direction of Reicha in 1811 again. 1806-1808 he was 1st horn player in the orchestra of the grand theater of Bordeaux, 1808-1811 in the orchestra of the Paris Opera; Here he followed the famous horn players Kenn and Duvernoy. 1816-1830 he was a member of the Royal and Imperial Chapels, 1832-1842 he belonged to the music of King Louis-Philippe. 1802-1817 he was (deputy) professor and 1817-1820 properly employed professor at Cons. 1828-1838 he held the post as a soloist of the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire de Paris.
Dauprat's compos. have essentially only the merit, the didactic and virtuoso repertoire of his Instr. to have expanded. After his contemporary, Fétis, he had a very beautiful tone and phrased with an elegance that is rarely found. This report and the examination of his teaching book make him (in accordance with tradition) one of the biggest names in French hornists. He played and taught only on the natural horn (without valves), but he has the merit of having been interested in the first attempts of Klappenhörnern. The memory of his name is always associated with the quintets of Reicha, with whom he made known to the Parisian audience. The fame of his memory is still so important among the players that his diploma of the First Prize (signed by Gossec and the founder of the Cons., Sarrette) and his horn are still preserved with righteousness and exhibited in the Museum of the Paris Conservatoire.
The concertos of this edition are all based on the first prints and autographs.

Concertino for Horn and Orchestra (1825)

The concertino was composed in 1825 the dedication reads composta per il Signore Barone di Quintella. The autograph of the National Library Paris has got the Italian title Concertino par corno mistro . “Corno mistro“ or in French „cor mixte“ means that the horn part is written mostly for the middle register, using the range of 1 ½ octaves. One of the famous horn players of the cor mixte of that time was Frederic Duvernoy. The concertino has been edited now for the first time.

  Dauprat's concertos for horn

Dauprat wrote 1860 new score copies of its works for horn and orchestra (these are in the Parisian national library today). By the way, he changed some musical thoughts and arrangements. Dauprat wishes only this new "edition 1860, par ecole Dauprat" to be played or printed.
