Martin Joseph Mengal composed several works for horn and orchestra. His “Premier Concerto de Cor a Grand Orchester op.20” must have appeared in print around 1815 in Paris. It was re-edited as ROM 401 2020.
Another work is Concert No. 2, which is preserved as an autograph today. This concerto will be published under the publishing number ROM 422 for the first time in 2023. Mengal was probably also planning a Concerto No. 3, of which sketches for the first movement have survived, but this work was printed as a one-movement “Solo de Cor”, dedicated to his brother Jean, by the Parisian publishing house Schonenberger during Mengal's lifetime
The autograph sketches for the present composition have been preserved in the library of the Conservatory in Ghent (Belgium). Designated “2d Solo de Cor”, the present first edition is to be classified chronologically after Mengal’s compositions for horn and orchestra.
