Concertante No 1 E major for 2 Horns and Orchestra
Johann Christoph Vogel was born in Nuremberg in 1758 and was first educated by the chapel master G.W. Gruber, later by J. Riepel in Regensburg who taught Vogel the words of Graun and Hasse. In 1776 Vogel went to Paris playing the horn in the orchestras of the dukes of Montmorency and Valentinois. There he was witness of the dramatic dispute about the opera reform in Paris and became devotee of Gluck.
In 1786 his first opera "Das goldene Vlies" was played with great success. His next opera Demophon even beat it with even more success in 1788, however Vogel died short time earlier, on the 27th June 1788 in Paris.
His both Concertantes for 2 horns and orchestra had been published in 1780s by Sieber in Paris. Both works are in e major, the first with two oboes and two tutti horns in addition to the strings. The title of the second concertante names the same instrumentation, however there were two flute parts in addition which are independent of the oboe parts. The concertantes seem to be oriented on works of Rosetti because there are many stilistic advices of that time like the 6/8 rhythm in the third movement, also called Rondo a la chasse.
