Johann David Heinichen, the son of a Protestant pastor, was born on April 17, 1683 in Crössuln, near Weißenfels (Saxony-Anhalt). His musical training began in 1696 at the Thomasschule in Leipzig under the direction of the Thomaskantor Schelle (1648 - 1701) and he received organ and harpsichord lessons from Johann Kuhnau (1660 - 1722). From 1702 he began studying law at the University of Leipzig, but continued to work as a lawyer after completing his studies until he finally decided on a career in music.
In 1717 he took up his position as bandmaster of the court orchestra in Dresden. Until his early death in 1729, he composed a variety of works, including concertos, chamber music and church music, which met the requirements of the Saxon court.
An “undiscovered” treasure from his work is the present concerto (sonata) in F major for 2 solo horns, which can be found under the number Mus.2398-N-5 in the Saxon State and University Library in Dresden.
