was 31 January 1759 born in Joinville (Haute -Marne. He was the 14th and last child of a saddlery dealer in Joinville. Age of ten he wrote as a chorister of Saint -Laurent a fair. Devienne to exercise acquired on all instruments , mainly on the flute and the bassoon. Somewhat later he was in the service of the Cardinal de Rohan , as he himself testifies in his op 5 of dedication. From 1784 he was a musician of the Loge Olympique , where he became familiar with Haydn's symphonies, and to 1788 in the Swiss Guard . , the young flutist and composer produced since 1782 in the Concert Spirituel . on 24.12. 1785 a concerto de cor de chasse , played by Jean Lebrun . Together with the musicians Hugot and Lefebvre , he led his Symphonie concertante for flute , clarinet et basson on (May 4, 1787) . the following year Henry Domnich played a concerto de cor (March 15 ) and a Concerto de Perret basson (December 8 ) . on 28 January 1789 he resigned as first bassoonist in the Théâtre de Monsieur and remained here until his death. It was a glorious and happy time for him. He was a very sought-after teacher , a famous virtuoso and chamber music composer.
Since 1791, he belonged to the rank of sergeant , the music of the National Guard. As this now Institut national de musique was , he got a job as a teacher at this . He participated with Gossec and Catel at the large public performances and composed for it but many patriotic hymns and , symphonic works , of which the most famous " La Bataille des Jemmappes " is a picturesque piece that should celebrate the victory of Dumouriez (1792 ) . As an administrator and inspector of the National Institute Devienne became the first professor Class for flute appointed as the Institute 's name Conservatoire de musique received (1795 ), this office he held , as far as his health permitted him. He died in the insane asylum at Charenton on 6 September 1803.

1785 the present work published by the Paris publisher Imbault "Sinfonie concertante pour Cor et Basson " . Noted on the title " Executée au Concert de la Reine et au Concert Spirituel / par LeBrun et Devienne " . The Concert spiritual took place on 13 3 1785 held in Paris . It made music Devienne itself on bassoon and horn player Jean Lebrun (1759 - 1809) , who would later go as 1.Hornist to Berlin. Lebrun learned the horn playing at Giovanni Punto and Jean Joseph Rodolphe ( Rodolphe ) . The concert was apparently repeated on 04/29/1785 . Again it rang on 14 / 15 4.1786 by Lebrun and the bassoonist Ozi and probably on 06.04.1790 .
