Carl Goldmark, grew up as a son for Hungarian Jewish parents, born on May 18th, 1830 in Keszthely (Hungary) at the Lake Balaton.
He got instrumental and composition lessons in his youth, was autodidact, however, essentially.
For some years he played instruments as a theatre violinist in Ödenburg and Vienna.
He got a grant for music, 1863 this was awarded to him by the three members of the commission of the Ministry of Education Eduard Hanslick, eater and sharp corner. With 27 years he took for the first time the decision with 28 years to step with compositions of one's own in front of the audience he gave his first concert with works of his own. At the beginning of the sixties was gold mark as Bratschist of a young string quartet working. The friendship arose with Johannes Brahms at this time. Carl Goldmark was a very popular composer the end of the 19th century within its later years who was overwhelmed with superlatives. Of gold mark as of 1890 1892 wrote that Jean Sibelius, temporary pupil he has an extraordinary reputation in Vienna and one would be envied in many places, being the pupils. Julius Korngold, successor of Eduard Hanslick spoke about the "gold mark cult".
Numerous honours confirm the high reputation which enjoyed gold marks at its time. Already 1866 were it the honorary membership awarded to the society for music-lovers in Vienna.
He got the Knight's Cross the Leopold medal » for his activity in the field of the musical art and the musical literature « 1896. The University of Budapest conferred a doctorate the 80-year-old to the PhD h. c in 1910. Together with R. ostrich and it became a. on February 7th. 1914, the Accademia appointed honorary member Santa Cecilia in Rome. Gold mark died in Vienna on January 2nd, 1915.
